A Message from the Chairman

Welcome to the Middlesex nurses’ website.

The Middlesex Hospital Nurses’ Benevolent Fund is an association of former Middlesex nurses facilitating networking, maintaining connections, supporting members and providing assistance in times of need.

Over the past year we have welcomed new members, although inevitably we have also lost dear colleagues. The Trustees have had a busy year supporting members at times of need. There are economic uncertainties for us all, but as circumstances change the need for support can be critical for some; the Fund may be able to offer help when it matters most. We have provided mobility aids, travel expenses to hospital appointments and money for little extras for residents in Care Homes, to name just a few of our grants.

Professional development awards are also part of our remit, and we are keen to support the nursing and midwifery professionals of today.

On Christmas day 2024 His Majesty King Charles delivered his annual broadcast to the nation from the former Middlesex Hospital Chapel, now known as the Fitzrovia chapel, a great endorsement of the thousands who care for others in the NHS.

The chapel which is the only part of the hospital that remains intact stands as a place of memory and sanctuary as well as an enduring legacy. There is always a warm welcome there for the many visitors who come from far and wide to enjoy the varied programme of events on offer.

The former Middlesex nurses who are members of MHNBF continue to stretch out a hand of friendship to their former colleagues. The unique bond that connects us is as strong as ever, originating from the fact that in days gone by, young student nurses trained and also lived together in their training hospital, great loyalty to the institution developed.

In looking to the future, the Trustees of MHNBF will ensure that the Fund is used for charitable purposes in keeping with the founding principles of the charity, they aim to support nurses through training and education to become the nurse leaders of the future. A fitting legacy for the selfless and pioneering work carried out by countless men and women on the staff of The Middlesex Hospital over many years. Pride in the nursing profession and what it can achieve is enormous.
